ZitatAlles anzeigenSunday, 1:30 p.m.: Striving For Points in Munich
The team fought to the last man and made any effort, but Werder Bremen, the reigning champions of the DFB Cup, were too strong in the end. However, on Sunday, November 1, 2009, the Red Devils are facing their next challenge at the Allianz Arena in Munich where three points are at stake again.
Both the Red Devils and 1860 Munich were eliminated in their mid-week DFB Cup matches against renowned Bundesliga first division clubs. The Bavarian Lions lost 0-3 to Schalke 04 on Wednesday. However, unlike 1. FC Kaiserslautern, 1860 Munich did not make the wished for start to the new season. Head coach Ewald Lienen and the club’s representatives aimed high in advance of the new campaign and made numerous changes to the squad. Even though with the Bender twins Sven (Borussia Dortmund) and Lars (Bayer Leverkusen) as well as Fabian Johnson (VfL Wolfsburg), three promising players have left TSV 1860 Munich, more than ten new signings have joined the club in advance of the new season. Instead of solely pinning their hopes on players from the own youth department, like TSV 1860 Munich did in the past, the new team consists of a mix of young and well-experienced players.
As summer signing Gabor Kiraly (FC Burnley) has replaced the ten year younger Philipp Tschauner, the most obvious example for this change of style is the position of the goalkeeper. While other new signings like Antonio Rukavina (Borussia Dortmund), Alexander Ludwig (FC St. Pauli), Aleksandar Ignjovski (OFK Belgrad) and Kenni Cooper (FC Dallas) are part of Lienen’s first-choice line-up, 1860’s head coach still is in search of his favorites for other positions. The performance record of 1860’s established players shows quite different results. While team captain Benjamin Lauth tops the club’s scoring list with four goals, earning him a place in the first-choice line-up, old hand Daniel Bierofka has not managed to make an appearance during the new campaign because he underwent groin surgery. Former FCK team captain Mathieu Beda is still fighting for a place in the first-choice eleven.
Unlike Breda, Marco Kurz left TSV 1860 Munich to join 1. FC Kaiserslautern in summer. Since Kurz has played for the Bavarian Lions before he took over as 1860’s head coach, he knows the opponent very well. Nevertheless, his main focus of attention certainly is on his own team, which he wants to bring back on track again after two successive defeats. Even if Ilicevic is plagued by groin problems, he is likely to pull on the FCK jersey on Sunday. Also Sidney Sam, who has been kept out by thigh problems in Bremen, will be strengthening the team again on Sunday. Those players, who have pulled on their FCK jerseys in Wednesday’s DFB Cup match against Bremen, came home to Kaiserslautern without any injuries and wounds. Consequently, only the long-term injured players Sascha Kotysch and Manuel Hornig will be absent in Munich on Sunday.
The support of the loyal fans of FCK continues to be overwhelming. 1,500 fans have joined the Red Devils on their mid-week journey to Bremen, offering brilliant support for their team. In Munich, Marco Kurz and his men can look forward to the support of twice as many fans. To travel from one end of the republic to the other within only five days, really requires and shows “Herzblut”. The Red Devils will do everything to reward their loyal fans on Sunday.
